Service Update: CPKC Train Derailment

6 February 2024

An incident involving a CPKC derailment occurred on the Brooks Subdivision southeast of Calgary, Alberta on evening of Monday February 5th. There were no reported injuries. However, a number of Fastfrate containers were impacted by the event.

Our Toronto and Montreal customer service team is in the process of reaching out to all affected customers to provide updates regarding their shipments.

Service Update: Western Canada Operations

Extreme cold weather for Western Canada has been lifted for the Prairie regions – Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.


Containers are still be offloaded and prioritized for Fastfrate from CPKC, but we are still experiencing some service delays. Our operations team are working to ensure there are minimal disruptions, but we can expect delays up to 72 hours.

Customer Bulletin – Extreme Cold Weather in Western Canada

The extreme cold weather is still affecting parts of Western Canada, in the Prairie regions (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) making it difficult for our drivers to stay out for long periods of time and trucks to safely on the roads. The safety of our drivers is very important to us.

Service delays are in affect across Western Canada, our operations team are working to ensure there are minimal delays but can not guarantee pick up and deliveries as the extreme weather continues throughout this week. 

CPKC has also enacted their comprehensive winter contingency plans ensuring they are prepared to handle harsh winter operating conditions. The plan includes train length restrictions in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and parts of Northern Ontario. They will monitor the situation and provide updates on the impacted networks.

Service Updates: CPKC Train Derailment

As part of our commitment to open communication with our valued customers, we are reaching out to provide an update regarding an incident that occurred last week. On September 27, 2023, in the area of Parry Sound, Ontario, a CPKC train experienced a derailment. While an investigation is currently underway, we are relieved to report that no injuries have been documented, and there is no threat to public safety.

However, we want to inform you that this derailment will impact our LTL operations, specifically those involving shipments traveling along the main line to Calgary. As a result of this incident, a backlog of containers has emerged due to the bottleneck it has created.

Our dedicated teams are diligently working to receive these containers as they arrive, but it is important to anticipate delays. We are actively assessing the extent of these delays. If you have already scheduled delivery appointments, we kindly request that you reach out to our customer service teams to reschedule them promptly. Our primary aim is to ensure that your shipments are promptly delivered upon arrival.

We wish to provide an update on the aftermath of Hurricane Lee, which made landfall in the Maritimes over the past weekend. We are pleased to convey that there have been no reported injuries or adverse effects resulting from the storm. However, it is important to note that certain shipments are currently experiencing delays due to the impact of Hurricane Lee.

Our dedicated teams are diligently working to expedite the unloading and delivery of these delayed shipments to ensure a prompt resolution. We have been closely monitoring the situation in Kelowna and Yellowknife. As of today, we have started to send freight to Kelowna and the branch has started to deliver those shipments to our customers.

However, we are still closely monitoring, as the situation can quickly change, and to ensure the safety of our team, we will halt operations if needed. We will continue to update you.

For Yellowknife, the area is still under evacuation therefore there are no shipments going out and Edmonton is still holding all Yellowknife freight until the evacuation order has been lifted.

Some areas are under evacuation orders causing shipment delays. Calgary will be holding all Kelowna freight on their dock until the evacuation order has been lifted. Edmonton will be holding all Yellowknife and surrounding area’s freight until the evacuation order has been lifted.

Severe flooding in Halifax and surrounding area

Several highways, roads and the main rail line in Halifax are closed due to record-breaking heavy rainfall, the affected areas are either flooded or completely washed-out.

We have identified a few shipments that will be delayed, our customer service teams will reach out to the affected customers and advise on next steps.
